No. It was not an accident that I capitalized the “S”. I think you can guess where this is going. Pundits in the US have raised concerns about Muslim extremism. They often point out to the Theocracy in Iran.
Iran was under the brutal dictatorship of Mohammad Reza Shah from 1941 to 1979. He did modernize Iran. By 1979, Iran had a somewhat westernized culture. Under his regime though he established, with the help of the CIA and Mossad, a punishing domestic security agency, called SAVAK. The Shah ruled Iran with an iron fist.
Uran went through a cultural revolution, in the late 1970’s, culminating with the insertion of Ruhollah Knomeini as Supreme Leader in 1979. The US embassy was invaded and Americans were taken hostage and not released until Reagan became President of the United States, in January 1981.
Iran has become an extreme fundamentalist theocracy. This is so, even though there is a bubbling undercurrent within the population to return to western ways. Iran has become thew booogeyman to the American Right. They point out to the Religious extremism, to the Muslim threat. They point out to the loss of rights experienced by citizens in Iran.
The US Constitution stresses the separation of Church and State. However that separation is being destroyed. The Supreme Court has overturned Roe vs Wade. With just one stroke of the pen, half the population of the United States have lost the right to control their own bodies. Ironic that most of those people who applaud the Supreme Court decision are the same people who proclaim “no way you are going to force me to wear a mask”
In a follow up decision the Supreme Court ruled that a high school football coach can not be fired for having his team huddle in a prayer before a game. There is a potential for this to get worse. One of the Justices, Clarence Thomas, is suggesting that previous rulings including contraception and gay marriage should be reviewed. Interracial marriage was iliegal until the late 1960’s. Thomas is not pushing for this to be reviewed. possibly because his wife is white.
With a six to three Conservative majority in the Supreme Court, things can become more extreme. More rights could be lost. Excvept for one. Gun rights.
