Joe Biden gave a speech lasdt night just blocks away from the Capitol, which was under siege on January 6, 2021. His speech was on the potential threat to American democracy. Some may say, and justifiably so, that it was a partisan campaign speech given that the midterms are less than a week away. Even though he was talking to Americans of all political stripes, he talked about the threat being raised by the MAGA Republicans who, he said, was a minority in that party. Many Republicans will probably brush off the speech as a desparate “the sky is falling” speech. Even though, Biden’s stated intent was to give a message to all Americans it was most likely directed to those potential democrat voters who are thinking at not voting at all. So, essentially, it was a get out and vote speech.
This speech is being made at a time where there are over 300 election deniers running for office. It is being made at a timr where Elon Musk now runs twitter and actually forwarded a tweet of an article stating that the Paul Pelosi attack was actually a drunken fight between gay lovers. It was made in a week where former President Trump cast doubts whether it was an actual attack. This morning I actually got a post from one of my FaceBook friends of the Trump Junior meme of a hammer on underwear with the caption of it being a Paul Pelosi halloween costume. Rather than me belabouring the point, I will finish this chirp with excerpts from Biden’s speech
“We can’t take democracy for granted any longer,”
“As I stand here today, there are candidates running for every level of office in America – for governor, for Congress, for attorney general, for secretary of state who won’t commit to accepting the results of the elections they’re in,”
“This intimidation, this violence against Democrats, Republicans and non-partisan officials just doing their jobs, is the consequence of lies told for power and profit, lies of conspiracy and malice, lies repeated over and over to generate a cycle of anger, hate, vitriol and even violence,”
“American democracy is under attack because the defeated former president … refuses to accept the will of the people,”
