This is Senator Tommy Tuberville, from the great state of Alabama. He is a much loved figure in the State, well most of the State. He was a coach for the Auburn Tigers football team from 1999 to 2008. He had great success at Auburn, including an undefeated team, in 2004. His Auburn team had a record of 7-3 against the hated Alabama Crimson Tide. So maybe some Crimson Tide fans are not that enamoured with him.
He parlayed his football successes into a Senate run and won a Senate seat in 2020. He was endorsed by Trump. He beat out Trump whipping boy Jeff sessions in the Republican Primary and beat out Doug Jones in the election.
He got himself into a bit of trouble this week. On a local Alabama radio station this week, Tuberville was asked if white nationalists should be in the military. He responded, as follows,
“Well, they call them that. I call them Americans.
Of course that caused a stir. Democrats jumped on it. Then Tuberville, later in the week, tried to explain what he was trying to say.
“Here’s the problem, Democrats portray all MAGA Republicans as White nationalists, that’s not true, we got a lot of great people in the military that are MAGAs, that’s what I was talking about ”
He could not stop there though.
“I look at a White nationalist as a, as a Trump Republican. That’s what we’re called all the time, a MAGA person, that’s what I’m just that. Well, I agree that we should not be characterizing Trump supporters as White nationalists,”
Tuberville is already in a deep hole. He has croiticized the military for going ‘woke’, being forced to read ‘woke’ literature. He has also put a hold on the Senate nomination process confirming military nominees because of his anger over the Pentagon’s policy of providing paid military leave for members needing to travel for abortions.
Democrats have gleefully jumped all over Tuberville on this, as well. Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader blasted Tuberville.
“Senator Tuberville, needs to do two things. He needs to come out and state clearly and unequivocally that White nationalism is un-American and he needs to drop his destructive holds on hundreds of our senior military leaders. This farse is endangering our national security, putting the lives of men and women who have served our country for decades in real trouble, and it needs to end,”
It may all be a circus, but Democrats can’t help it if Tuberville keeps insisting on digging himself deeper into a hole.
