The carbon tax increased in April 1. At the same time, rebates have increased as well.
Protests, enflamed by the rhetoric of Pierre Poilievre, have erupted throughout Canada. Justin Trudeau is claiming that critics of the carbon tax increase are ignoring the rebates. In Alberta, the quarterly rebates are $225 per quarter for a single person, $337.50 for a couple and $450 for a family. So, over the year a family would receive carbon tax rebates totalling nearly $2,000. Trudeau is further claiming that 80% of Canadians will benefit under this structure.
Canadians should do the math to determine whether they would benefit or not. Most Canadians won’t. We are in an age where facts don’t matter anymore. Given the increasingly bitter partisan divide, Canadians who support Poilievre will accept his rhetoric. The same will go for Trudeau supporters. Trudeau has even challenged premiers to come up with a better plan. None has been presented. But again this does not matter. This is our sad reality.
