The Christian right has been going after popular cultural icons for years. back in the 80s it was rock ‘n’ roll. In the 90s it was dungeons and dragons. Then there was the uproar over Harry Potter books. of course the Republicans have joined in on this going after icons like M&Ms, Barbie and the latest target being Taylor Swift. This is in the era of Trump, who is as unchristian as they come.
Well, the Christian right and Republicans have a new target and that is Dolly Parton. Parton, who donates millions, on a yearly basis, and who is one of the most Christian like people on the planet, was harshly criticized in the Federalist, a Republican media outlet.
“Parton equates love with agreement, but the two are not reciprocal. Love doesn’t mean we must accept sinfulness as good to avoid hurting someone’s feelings,”
The sinfulness reference refers to the LGBTQ community. The person writing this article is upset about the fact that Parton has not condemned the LGBTQ community and lifestyle. The concept of Christianity has changed since Trump has come onto the scene. Pastors are complaining that they can no longer give sermons about Jesus praising the merciful, the meek and the peacemakers because in the time of Trump, this would be considered weakness.
The one good thing about this is that there has been harsh blowback on the article as well there should be. But this is a sad sign of the times as to what America has become.
