Stay Or Go?

I have to admit that since the Trump circus arrived in 2015, I have pretty well followed American politics and left Canadian politics on the back burner. The only time that I really spent watching the Canadian news networks was during the Covid crisis and the freedom convoy protest.

I guess there’s an election coming up next year. It could be even this year depending on what the NDP does. One of the issues that is being dragged out to the forefront is whether Justin Trudeau should stay or should he resign as leader?

Anyone following Canadian politics will recognize that there’s a long period of power by one party and then shifting to the other party. Other than for guest appearances by Joe Clark (who?) and Kim Campbell, one person has been at the helm for a long number of years In my lifetime, we had Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, Jean Chrétien, Stephen, Harper, and now Justin Trudeau. Given history, Pierre Poilievre, will be the next Prime Minister and he will be around for at least 10 years.

The Liberals, under Justin Trudeau, have lost two key by elections in the last few months. There are grumblings in the Liberal party that Trudeau’s time is done. That being said, Trudeau says he is sticking it out. Of course the liberals could force Trudeau out and replace him with another leader. That happened with Jean Chrétien, when Paul Martin came to power. Martin was not around for a long time. He lost out to Stephen Harper.

I am not a fan of Pierre Poilievre. To me, he is a mini Trump. Typical of all opposition parties , he is not coming out with any policies. He is just criticizing government policies. But that is just politics. If the liberals were in the opposition, they would be doing the same thing.

So will Justin Trudeau stay or go? Given history, sadly for liberals, I don’t think it will matter. I hope I am wrong.
