The woman shown above is Crystal Mangum. Back in 2006 she was working as an exotic dancer. She was at a party with the three men shown above and accused them of raping her. This was a highly publicized back in 2006 and received a lot of airplay.
The accusation and subsequent events resulted in the Duke lacrosse team suspending it season. The coach was let go. The district attorney on the case was charged, eventually, with criminal contempt and disbarred.
in 2007, the Attorney General of the state of North Carolina, reviewed the case and exonerated the three men, stating that charges should never been bought against them. Shortly after the charges were dropped Duke University and the three men reached an undisclosed settlement. The three men also reached a settlement with the city of Durham, back in 2014.
This week, while being interviewed in a podcast, Mangum recanted her accusations of rape.
“I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t, and that was wrong. And I betrayed the trust of a lot of other people who believed in me.”
Mangum did the interview from prison. She is serving time for a second-degree murder conviction, following the stabbing of her boyfriend back in 2013.
