The French debate was last night. There were two big winners and one big loser. The big winners were fans of the Montréal Canadiens and Quebec strawberries. The big loser was the Green party. Other than that, there’s no clear cut winner in the debate itself.
The debate started two hours earlier than planned, to accommodate fans of the Montréal Canadiens, who, if they watch the debate, only missed the first period of the game. The Habs won, by the way, and are in the playoffs.
The candidates were asked what specific US goods they were not buying now. WhileMark Carney stated that he had stopped buying American liquor, the other three candidates said that they were buying Quebec strawberries instead of American strawberries. A big victory for the strawberry market in Quebec.
The big loser was the Green party who were told in the morning of the debate that they were disqualified from participating in both the French and English debate, because they did not field enough candidates.
Jagmeet Singh, had a fairly decent debate. He was consistently frustrated because he tried to bring healthcare into the debate, which was not one of the topics. He was frequently cut off by the moderator and he ended up speaking two minutes less than the other candidates.
The party leaders ganged up on Mark Carney, which was to be expected. Despite his lack of complete fluency in French language, he handled himself pretty well. What was surprising was the way that both Jagmeet Singh and Blanchet attacked Pierre Poilievre.
In the end, there should be no changes, in the polling, as a result of the French debate.
Meanwhile, in the clown circus down south, Trump plans to cut health and human services funding by 40% and he has declared war on the universities. Another reason why I’m so glad I’m Canadian.
That’s all I have for today.
