In my much younger days, the holocaust was still fresh in the minds of the world’s population. Israel had stood up against the entire Arab world, it seemed, in wars in 1967 and 1973. Israel had a lot of world sympathy at that time.
One of my favourite authors back, then was Leon Uris. He wrote a number of books relating to Israel, the formation of Israel and the plight of Jews. One of my favourite books was Mila 18, written by Uris. This was the story of the Nazis attempting to eliminate the Jews in the Warsaw ghetto in 1944 while the world watched. I remember staying up all night to finish the book.
Things have changed since then. Israel has announced that it will carry out a large ground attack on Gaza city to eliminate what they claim are 3000 Hamas fighters, in the city. Since the brutal Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel, in retaliation, has killed or injured approximately 10% of the population in Gaza. Famine is widespread and a UN commission says that Israel is committing genocide. Israel is losing sympathy and support by the day.
Israel may eliminate those Hamas fighters and win the battle, in the short term. But in the long-term, it is in a no win situation. For every Palestinian killed, the children, the mothers, the father’s, the relatives and the friends of those killed will want to revenge on Israel. Where the world sympathized with Israel and the Jewish population after World War II, the same sympathy will not be on the Palestinians in Gaza.
Let me be clear on one thing. I am not, under any circumstance, comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. The situation here is completely different. Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, plain and simple. But there are similarities in what happened in the Warsaw ghetto in 1944 and what is happening in Gaza city now
That is all I have for today.
