Donald Trump is a narcissist. Many think that he is destroying democracy, in America, and replacing it with an autocracy. In his immigration battles, he has separated children from parents. He is threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act, in order to send troops to cities such as Chicago and Portland. He is weaponizing the justice department to go after his perceived enemies, such as Jim Comey.
Trump is all that. Yet, he must be given credit for possibly ending the two year conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has resulted in the death of close to 70,000 Palestinians. It is only a month ago that Israel bombed Qatar, in Israel’s attempt to assassinate Hamas leaders who were meeting in Qatar. The attack united the Arab world against Israel. If you recall, Qatar had gifted Trump with a $400 million airplane. Trump went after Benjamin Netanyahu for launching that attack. Trump, along with others in his administration has bullied both Israel and Hamas into accepting a 20 point peace plan. The bullying has worked. While details, and there are many, need to be ironed out, both Israel, and Hamas, have accepted the peace plan. In the next day, or so, Hamas will return all the remaining hostages, living or dead. Israel, will cease bombardment and will throw back troops back to a line accepted by both sides. Celebrations are currently going on in both Israel and Gaza.
A number of questions remain. Will Hamas be required to disarm completely? Will Hamas have a roll in governing Gaza? These questions along with others will threaten the fragile peace that appears to be achieved.
Trump could very well win a Nobel peace prize for this. The thought of this happening makes my liberal heart turn cold. But still if this holds, I will have to say that he deserves it.
