456,000

Note the caption. Thomas Lukasuk was a former conservative, deputy premier, in Alberta. Not a flaming liberal Monday true blue Alberta conservative. He is also a proud Canadian.

Lukaszuk was not happy when Danielle Smith and the UCP came in. He was also not happy with the separatist talk that Smith was beginning to spread. So he decided to organize a petition, with a question,

“Do you agree that Alberta should remain within Canada?”

Under previous referendum laws, for the petition to be accepted, Lukaszuk had to get signatures from 20% of the Alberta voting population and he had to do this within 90 days of starting the petition drive. He ended up with over 456,000 signatures, approximately 160,000 more signatures than he needed.

Elections Alberta now has until early January to verify the signatures and send it to the Alberta legislature.

Lukaszuk, his canvassers and volunteers, went above and beyond, to acquire the 456,000 signatures.

Danielle Smith changed the rules in early July. Now, signatures are needed from only 10% of voting population and there’s 120 day period for this to be done

Prosperity Alberta, took on the mantle of organizing a petition with a question asking whether Alberta should leave Canada.

“ Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province in Canada?”

So how many signatures has Prosperity Alberta gotten so far? Well, that would be none. The reason for that is that the question has been referred by Elections Alberta to the courts, questioning the constitutionality of the question.

Once again, congratulations to Thomas Lucaszuk and the canvasser/volunteers.

That’s all I have for today.
