Donald Trump, on late Friday/early Saturday, told Iran that if the Strait was not opened in 48 hours he would start bombing power plants in Iran. That would’ve set a deadline of Monday morning. On Sunday, it became apparent that this deadline was pushed back to 8 PM eastern time Tuesday night. The deadline was set at the same time period, as his profanity laced post.
A cease-fire proposal was floated around late Sunday and early Monday. Iran has rejected the proposal and is demanding a total end to the war.
Donald Trump is angry. He knows that the Strait has to be open. Even though he claims that the US does not need any oil through the Strait, the US would still be affected by global oil prices. This morning gas at the pumps in the US averages $4.12 per gallon.
Iran in its various forms has been around since 700 BC. This is not their first rodeo. Where Trump‘s profanity laced post was a message of threat to Iran. Iranian leaders saw the message and, possibly correctly so, as an act of desperation. They know that Trump wants out of this war as soon as possible. They know that Trump wants an offramp that will make him look like he won something.
In that sense, Iran has all the cards. If Donald Trump goes through with his attack on power plants, it would be considered a war crime. The US would be doing to Iran, what Russia is doing to Ukraine.
Donald Trump has managed the impossible. Where Iran was seen as evil just two months ago now they are a sympathetic figure. Unbelievable.
