The liberal party, led by Mark Carney, will be holding theirconvention in Montreal this weekend. The liberals are riding on an unbelievable hot streak right now. A fifth MP, four of them being conservative, have crossed over to the liberals. As of right now, with three vacant seats the liberals hold a majority. There will be three by elections next Monday and the liberals need only one to keep that majority
Mark Carney, as liberal leader, has an approval rating of anywhere between 63 and 68%. The liberal party is a whole has a lead of around 15% over the conservatives. This is at a time when the economic outlook is not all that rosy.
How is this happening? David Coletto, CEO of the polling firm, Abacus Data, explains
“ people still overwhelmingly believe that the cause of the pain is not Mark Carney or not the decisions that the liberal government are making – it’s Donald Trump”
There you have it. It was only 16 months ago that Pierre Poilievre and the conservatives had a 20 point lead over the liberals. Just 16 months ago. A couple of months later Mark Carney was chosen to lead the liberal party. Two months after that the liberals won the election. Mark Carney focussed on what Trump was doing and the damage that Trump was doing not only to Canada, but the world. He still keeps the spotlight on Trump as evidenced by his speech, in Switzerland, a couple of months ago. Poilievre, did not focus on Trump during the election campaign and still, to this day, avoids talking about Donald Trump. As a result, the conservative party is haemorrhaging and Poilievre’s approval rating is tanking
Remember that he did get an 87% approval rating a couple months back at his leadership review. But that approval rating was given by only 3000 members who showed up at the review and who had to pay $1000 for the privilege of attending the review
For now, the liberals are riding highand the conservatives and most likely Poilievre himself are doing a lot of soul-searching.
The liberals have to remember, though, it took only two months for the conservative lead, prior to the election, to evaporate. The liberals themselves cannot rest on their laurels.
That’s all I have for today.
