Time Change Not

Back in my younger days, when I was living back east, I could stay up till one or two in the morning no problem. SNL started at 11:30. Piece of cake. Monday night football started at 9 o’clock did not end until midnight or later. No problem.

But now, as I age, not so gracefully, 9 o’clock is the new midnight. I have lived out west now for nearly 30 years. So for me, SNL now starts at 9:30 and Monday night football starts at 6:15. Often times I will record SNL for the next day.

Danielle Smith and her UCP has now passed a bill saying that Alberta will be on daylight savings time all year long. Here’s the thing, Alberta being a northern province, summer means daylight to 10 or 11 at night depending on how far up north, one is in Alberta. Do we really need the extra daylight in the summertime?

On the other hand, in midwinter it’s still dark at 8:30 in the morning. With year long daylight time. Sunrise will not come until 930 or even 10 o’clock again depending on how far up north you are in Alberta. School kids will be going to school in the dark. That is not a safe thing.

I am a morning person. For it to be dark until 930 or 10 o’clock, in the morning, is simply depressing. The US tried year long daylight saving savings time in the mid 1970s. They ended it after a year because of increased traffic accidents and traffic accident deaths in the morning. The US is debating the same thing right now, but it looks like it won’t pass due to the same reason risk to the kids going to school and a greater risk of traffic accidents

Also for me, it would mean that SNL starts at 10:30 at night. That isn’t gonna work for me. Also, if you’re an Edmonton Oilers fan or an evil Calgary flames fan get used to late night hockey starts. For example, Saturday night has hockey double headers. The first game starts at 7 o’clock Eastern time and the second game starts at 10 o’clock Eastern time. So Toronto Maple Leafs fans usually watch their game at 7 o’clock. Out here in Alberta the Saturday night doubleheader early game starts at 5 o’clock, and the late game starts at 8 o’clock. So if the Oilers are playing the second half of the doubleheader, the game starts at 8 o’clock Alberta time. With the change to all year daylight time, our second game, would start at 9 o’clock. That is not good for all the young kids who want to watch the Oilers play nor is it for old codgers like myself. I can live with having to record SNL but to record a hockey game is a different story.

Well, that is my beef for today.
