More bad news for Pierre Poilievre (PP) and his ever decreasing number of supporters. Former conservative, Prime Minister Stephen Harper gave the closing remarks at the investment Summit in Toronto. Harper said that Canada had no choice, but to leave the negotiating table with the US with regard to the tariffs.
“This had to be a very difficult decision, but I do believe that our government had no choice but to take this path.”
Harper added that Canadian sovereignty was and is at stake.
“It is clear that the current U.S. administration views our level of economic integration as incompatible with our separate sovereignty. Thus to maintain that sovereignty, we must pursue diminished reliance on the United States.”
Harper also stated that Canada is making a good move seeking a stronger alliance with the EU.
This is simply more bad news for PP. Stephen Harper, by supporting Mark Carney will only strengthen Marc Carney’s approval ratings. In addition, the Alberta separatists cannot be too happy with this either. Stephen Harper is from the west after all.
It is a bad week, for conservatives and separatist all around actually. Kyle Campbell, an NDP candidate, won a by election in Calgary earlier this week. He won in a riding that had gone to the UCP in the last two elections.
Did I mention a bad week for conservatives. It is a similar bad week south of our border. Gas prices are now up to $4.40 a gallon. The Supreme Court shut down Donald Trump’s mail in ballot plans. Now the fed might increase interest rates rather than lower than which Trump so desperately wants. Meanwhile, the war in Iran continues
Back to our side of the border, PP and the conservatives will be getting together, today and tomorrow in Penticton BC, to try and get their act together. More conservative members are upset with the way the party is going. They are also split. Many want Canada to take a stronger stand against the US while others want closer ties. For PP he’s now faced in a situation where he’s trying to herd cats. Good luck on that one.
