We Are Fine

Separatists in two provinces are pushing to leave Canada. But, no need to push the panic button yet.

Quebec had their election last night. The Parti Québécois will form a minority government. They needed 64 seats for majority, but they only have, as of now, 59. They say they will not hold a separatist referendum until after Trump leaves the presidency. In other words, they are saying we need you Canada for now but after all this tariff crap is over with we want to form our own country. The case of having their cake and eating it too.

The Parti Québécois did win 59 seats but they got less than 30% of the total vote. Also, polling shows that less than 30% of Quebec’s want to separate. So this is not a hot stove issue at all in any sense., yet.

In Alberta, latest polling shows that 72% of Albertans want to stay in Canada, while only 23% would vote for separation. The separatist vote has been declining, and it won’t be helped by reports that separatist operators have been meeting with US Republicans and have even offered to share Alberta resource resources such as oil and water to help fund separation.

Daniel Smith has kept pushing for a sovereign Alberta within Canada, whatever that means. However, whether she likes it or not, she has been strongly linked with the separatists. It has gotten so bad for her and her UCP party that if a vote were held today, the NDP could actually win the provincial election. It has happened before with Rachel Notley.

Having said that, the stay in Canada crowd, in Alberta, cannot become overly confident. The referendum is only two weeks away. Pro Canada groups need to keep their pedal on the gas and get patriotic Alberta Canadians out to vote.
