This is Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas. Yesterday’s chirp covered the execution style murder, Friday night, of five people, in Cleveland, Texas, including an eight-year-old child.
Abbott’s first tweet, Saturday morning, was of a cute dog, with the caption,
“all smiles for the weekend”
Pretty insensitive tweet, given what happened the night before. It got worse. It took a day, but he did issue a tweet, announcing a reward of $50,000 for the capture of the shooter. He included a press release with the tweet.
“I’ve announced a $50K reward for info on the criminal who killed 5 illegal immigrants”.
The press release also stated that the five victims were illegal, as well as the shooter. The right-wing will do anything to deflect that the main culprit of gun deaths is guns. Anything but guns. Abbott is so mired in the defence of guns and hatred of immigrants that he overlooked the fact that five human beings, including a child were killed.
Following nationwide condemnation of the tweet, an apology was made. But it was not for branding the victims as illegals. It was for the fact that one of the victims was a legal immigrant. The apology was for identifying that victim as an illegal.
The right-wing does have an issue. The shooter has apparently been deported four times. The dates as to when he was deported is unknown. Some of them could have been under the Trump administration. It is concerning that this guy can come back, so easily, into the country. However, the other concern is, what kind of background check, if any, was done on the shooter to enable him to have guns. This guy is definitely not a responsible gun owner. This guy will likely not be captured. e can probably just as easily get out of the country as he got in.
I saw a video of the Cleveland sheriff responding to Abbott’s tweets. If you see the video you will see that the sheriff is the stereotype of a good ole boy, with the hat and all. One would expect a red neck comment. Nope.
“My heart is with this 8-year-old little boy. I don’t care if he was here legally. I don’t care if he was here illegally. He was in my county. Five people died in my county, and that is where my heart is — in my county, protecting my people to the best of our ability.”
Bless you.
