Since the Hamas attack on October 7 and the Israeli response, there has been a world wide increase in antisemitism. For example, there was an arrest of a 15 year-old boy in Ottawa for plotting a terrorist attacking on the Jewish community.
The cartoon above was published in the Toronto Sun this week. My first thought when it came to my attention was how did this ever get approved for publishing.
The Toronto Sun is under Postmedia which also has the National Post. The primary shareholder of Postmedia is Chatham Asset Management, an American Media Conglomerate, which has close ties to the Republican Party.
Currently, the Republican Party are following Trump’s lead and are becoming more anti-Ukraine by the day, being very hesitant to provide any more funding to Ukraine.
The picture by the Sun makes sense from a Republican standpoint in their alleged view that Ukraine is not being held accountable for the money provided them. But, for some reason, the cartoonist went too far and drew Zelensky with a Jewish caricature. What was the Sun thinking of letting this go to print?
The cartoon was roundly condemned and the Sun severely criticized. The Sun has since apologized and stated that they will no longer use the cartoonist. Will leave it there.
