If not for the two point conversion fiasco, the big story, over the weekend, would have been the Georgia/Florida State fiasco. Let me backtrack a bit.

When I was a kid, before cable tv, there were only about ten or eleven bowl games. The cream of the crop played in these games. They meant something. New Year’s day had four bowl games. CBS had the Cotton, ABC had the Sugar and NBC had the Rose and Orange. Back then, transferring schools was not really a thing. If you did you had to take a year off.

This year over 40 bowl games. Minnesota played in a bowl game and they were 5-7. We now have the Transfer Portal where student athletes can transfer schools without having to take a year off. The winter transfer portal period is December. We also have stars who hope to make the NFL skipping bowl games to get ready for the next level. Recipe for disaster.

We all know the story of Florida State. Undefeated regular season. Skipped over for the playoffs because their starting QB had a season ending injury. They ended up ranked fifth and Georgia, after being beaten by Alabama, ended up ranked 6th. Great matchup game. You would think.

By half time Georgia was up 42-3. Fans were leaving the stadium. Florida State had 14 starters opt out of the game. It was so bad, the Georgia coach demanded, after the game that changes had to be made to keep future farces from happening.

The 12 team playoff system next year may very well increase the irrelevance of bowl games not including the 12. Under the current December Transfer Portal period more student athletes will transfer during bowl season. NCAA, do something.
