IVF

So here is what happened. Three sets of parents, in Alabama, filed wrongful death lawsuits, when their frozen embryos were accidentally destroyed while being stored at an Alabama fertility clinic. A lower court dismissed the lawsuit. The court ruled that frozen embryos do not fall under the definition of a person. The Alabama Supreme Court took the case and ruled the opposite. The Court stated that and unborn child is a person,

“regardless of that child’s viability or stage of development.”

Immediate shockwaves around the US. In the very first hours, following the ruling, Republicans supported the ruling. Nikki Haley approved of the ruling. The Democrats in the other hand relished the opportunity to use any women’s reproductive rights issue against the Republicans.

Twitter went nuts. Eggs were labelled as chickens. An egg carton with cracked eggs was identified as a mass slaughter. Acorns were identified as trees. And so on. Then, Republicans discovered that a number of Republican couples were undergoing IVF treatments. Republicans started backing away. Nikki Haley reversed her position. Trump said that he was in full support of IVF.

Yesterday, Kay Ivey, the Governor if Alabama, signed into law legislation that would protect health-care providers from civil or criminal liability resulting from the Supreme Court ruling. Fertility clinics in Alabama have resumed IVF treatments after being shut down for nearly a month.

Sanity prevails but Democrats do have another weapon in their arsenal for the upcoming election.
