The hit TV series, Succession, is based, in part, on the family above. The show was about money and a thirst for power. The last season focussed on the children fighting to take over the company after the father, Logan Roy, died.
A real life drama is unfolding for the Murdoch family right now. Rupert Murdoch is 93 years old. He has been married five times. He has six kids, as shown above. Back in 1999 a family trust was established giving the first four kids an equal voting share in Rupert’s media empire. Companies within that empire include FOX and Wall Street Journal. Rupert is now trying to change the terms of that trust, giving all power to Lachlan, at the exclusion of the other three kids in that trust.
The reason for Rupert’s attempts to change, the terms of the trust is because of the divergent political views of four kids in the trust. Lachlan is most aligned with Rupert. The other three kids are not. Lachlan, following Rupert’s passing, would ensure that Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, retain its current conservative stance. By having equal shares, as it currently is, Fox News, as it is today, would be totally changed to a more, even a much more, liberal slant.
This went to court. In the courtroom, Rupert and his kids were all present throughout the case. The judge, in this hearing, ruled in favour of the three kids. This could be contested still. But if this ruling holds, it could result in a teutonic shift the cable news industry.
That’s all I got for today.
