Great Start

Mark Carney and the 13 premiers of the provinces and territories met in Saskatoon, yesterday, for a first minister’s meeting. It was the first meeting of its kind, in Saskatchewan, in 40 years. How did the meeting go?

Here’s a sample of what the premiers had to say.

Doug Ford.

“I’m going to be very blunt here — this has been the best meeting we’ve had in 10 years.”

“I described him today as Santa Claus.”

“Great collaboration, great communication and we all walked out of that room united.”

Susan Holt

“We’re not going to be in competition with each other because we’re in support of every province here.”

Scott Moe

“Today was a very positive meeting and I hope that Canadians feel very positive with their provincial, territorial and federal leaders coming out of here today in agreement.”

Danielle Smith

“I would say I’m encouraged by the immediate change of tone that we’ve seen from recent months.”

Three of the four leaders above are conservative premiers. When you have Danielle Smith onside, it was a pretty good meeting. There is still a long way to go. But when you have Donald Trump threatening tariffs, threatening annexation, it’s pretty good incentive to keep this ball rolling. Doug Ford mentioned that there was one person responsible for doing all this and that was Donald Trump.

One key element missing from this meeting was the participation of First Nations. as this keeps going, they have to be involved.

One last thing. Pierre Poilievre, after losing his seat, in the last election, said that he would be supportive of Mark Carney when liberal policies aligned with conservative policies. But yesterday he came out as the same old, whiny little boy. While the meeting was a success, Poilievre reacted by saying that meetings don’t accomplish anything. Some things never change.

That is all I have for today.
