Ever wonder what it would be like to live in a Trump America? Just come to Alberta and have a real life experience.
Danielle Smith and her UCP passed a bill early in the morning hours, today, ending the teacher strike and invoking the notwithstanding clause. The legislature stayed open even later than the 18 inning Dodgers Blue Jays game last night, to pass this legislation.
Nearly 90% of teachers had rejected the government’s last offer. It was not about the money. It was about class size and special assistants. But Daniel Smith’s, too bad so sad approach is forcing the teachers back to work.
By invoking the notwithstanding clause, the teachers have no way to challenge the back to work order. The teachers have said that they will obey the order and they will return to the classrooms this week.
This is a terrible blow for democracy. Other provinces, especially with those were conservative leaders, will see the example sent by Daniel Smith and say why not we do this as well.
Donald Trump says he wants Canada to be a 51st state. Well, he has at least one province in waiting.
That is all I have for today.
