Immediately after the January 6 insurrection, House and Senate members on both sides of the aisle were extremely pissed off at Donald Trump. Proof of that are some of the speeches made in both the House and Senate right after the insurrection. On the Republican side, notables such as Kevin McCarthy, Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham chastised Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection. Graham went so far as to say he had had it with Trump.
As time slowly moved on, these notables, slowly but surely, changed their tune on Trump. By the end of January, McCarthy had gone to Mar Lago to kiss the ring of Trump and have his picture taken with Trump. Graham has become Trump’s best friend again. McConnell has tried to play it more cagey. However, he did say that if Trump ran for President in 2024, McConnell would support him. All 3 took the coward’s way out.
Liz Cheney was just as pissed as many of her own party, immediately after the insurrection. She had a top leadership position in the House. But, where the notables identified above, changed their tune on Trump, she doubled down. She kept up her vitriol against Trump’s stolen election lies. The far right wing of the Republican House tried to have her removed from her leadership position in February. They failed. However, in May, with the support of Minority Leader McCarthy, they succeeded in removing her leadership status. She is now the Vice Chairman of the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack.
She has since received death threats and has spent close to $60,000, so far, on a private security detail. The Republicans, lead by Trump, are making a concentrated effort to have Liz Cheney defeated in the Republican Primary, this year, in her home state of Wyoming. House Members, such as alleged sex offender, Matt Gaetz, have come out to Wyoming to campaign against her. By doing what she is doing, Cheney has made herself an outcast in Trump’s Republican party. Why is she doing this? To paraphrase her, she wants to be a leader in restoring her party, to what it once was. I do not like her policies. But I have to give credit for the courage she is displaying in fighting the Trump takeover of her party.
