I have never read The Handmaid’s Tale, nor have I watched the series on tv. However, I imagine that this chirp could be right out of the Margaret Atwood book. More astonishing is the fact that it did not happen in a fundamentalist country but, rather, in the USA.
The Missouri State House passed legislation this week requiring female members of the State House to cover their arms. Seriously. Not a joke. Women comprise one third of the Missouri State House membership. More surprising is the fact that the proposed legislation was submitted by a woman, a Republican, of course. To say that Democrats are “up in arms” over this would be an understatement. Ashley Aune, a Democrat member summed it up by saying,
“Do you know what it feels like to have a bunch of men in this room looking at your top trying to decide whether it’s appropriate or not?”
