This is Tina Descovich. She is a co-founder and Executive Director of the group ‘Moms for Liberty’. Descovich formulated the idea for this group in 2020, aftrer she losta primary election for a seat that she had held oin the Brevard County school board. The winner of the primary, Jennifer Jenkins capitalized on Descovich’s opposition to mask mandates.
From a humble beginning, as of last month, this organization has 245 chapters, over 45 states, with a membership of over 115,000 members. This group has close ties with right-wing extremist groups such as the Proud Boys, QAnon and Christian Nationalist organizations.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has labelled Moms for Liberty, as follows,
“far-right organization that engages in anti-student inclusion activities and self-identifies as part of the modern parental rights movement” (that emerged “out of opposition to public health regulations for COVID-19, opposes LGBTQ+ and racially inclusive school curriculum, and has advocated books bans.”
To give you an idea as to how scary the organization is, their Miami chapter, attended an anti LGBT ‘save the children’ event in December 2022, with this event attended by members of the Proud Boys. Not to be outdone, the Hamilton County, Indiana, chapter printed the following quote at the top of its June 2023, monthly newsletter.
“He alone, who OWNS the youth, GAINS the future.”
The only problem was the fact that the quote was made by Adolph Hitler during a 1935 rally speech.
These women are bad news. They have been accused of harassing and threatening teachers, librarians and school board members, including Jennifer Jenkins, the woman who defeated Descovich in 2020., by way of filing a false child abuse report on Jenkins. Back in 2021, the head of the Livingston County, Michigan chapter threatened violence on the school board, there,
“We are coming for you. Take that as a threat. Call the FBI. I don’t care.”
Believe it or not, it does get worse. They have been criticized for issuing bounties, as per this one tweeted out in New Hampshire,
“We’ve got $500 for the person that first successfully catches a public school teacher breaking this law.”
I could go on, but I think you are getting the ist of it. As 2024 approaches, they will become, unfortunately, more prominent in the news cycle.
