Nikki Haley held a town, in New Hampshire, earlier this week, and wax asked what caused the civil war. She responded, as follows,

“I mean, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do”

She then added,

“I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people,”

The questioner shit back that in the year 2023, Haley could not mention the word slavery l.

Haley has since gone on damage control, including claiming that the questioner was a democrat plant, but the damage was done.

This says a lot about Haley but it also says a lot about the Republican primary voter. Haley used to be the Governor of South Carolina. Slavery and the civil war is a bit of a touchy subject in that state. She can’t alienate the voters there.

If greater note is that Haley and other Republican contenders are find behind Donald Trump. Trump won’t admit it but he is playing to the far right white nationalist base of voters. It is working for him too. When Trump mentioned that immigrants were poisoning the blood of America, Trump’s pill number amongst Republican primary voters went up! Haley, the daughter of Sikh immigrants, is in a bind. To get the votes needed, she has to skate around the entire civil war issue or risk losing a portion of the Republican primary voter base.

Scary times indeed.
