There was a bombing in Iran yesterday. It was near the burial site of military commander Qasem Soleimani. Mourners had gathered at his burial site to mark the 4th anniversary of his slaying, as ordered by then President, Donald Trump. There were two explosions, killing over 100 people and injuring near 300, at last count.
The situation. in the Middle East is already enflamed with the war in Garza with Hamas being involved, Hezbollah attacks into Northern Israel and ships suffering attacks on water. Things were ratcheted up the other by the assassination, by the Israelis, of a senior Hamas leader, in Lebanon. Now this.
Iranian officials were quick to identify Israel and the US as the likely attackers. But, the attack is not Israel’s style, assassination more their style, and the last thing the US wants to do is get mired into a Middle East conflict. Despite that “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” chants are already spreading through Iran.
So who did this? This is the deadliest attack in Iran since the 1979 revolution. Those attending the burial site were pro-Iranian government supporters. The Iranian government has faced challenges of late. The country is still simmering given tension’s following the death of Magda Amini and the subsequent crackdown and executions. There are separatist movements in Iran. Iran is not one uniform people but a divergent culture. Also, before 1979, Iran enjoyed a Western culture and its associated freedoms.
This attack has shaken the Iranian government. But, it only adds to the existing turmoil, in the Middle East.
