The House is back after a week long recess. Prior to the recess, put to the floor a vote on funding for Ukraine. The vote passed with strong Democratic support and some Republican support. Marjorie Taylor Greene, after the vote, promised that, when the recess ended, she would start to put in motion a vote to Johnson from his speaker. She stated that America would not stand for this.
She reiterated her threat following the end of the recess. The trouble is, most of her hardline allies are not backing her. They realize that it is a losing proposition that would make the Republicans in the House look more inept than they already are. furthermore, the Democrats have stated that if a vote was to be held, the Democrats would back Mike Johnson to keep his Speakership.
Arizona Republican Eli Crane accurately laid out the Republican dilemma, as follows,
“I’ve left the door open, but, one I don’t think it’s good timing. Two, if it was triggered, I don’t think it would pass. I think that the Democrats would keep Speaker Johnson. I think they would save him. So I don’t think it would pass. And furthermore, even if it did pass, I don’t have much confidence with the conference that we have that we could get a more conservative speaker for the American people.”
He is exactly right. This is going to be an embarrassing blow for Greene, but she had it coming.
