Not Done Yet

To say it has been a roller coaster of emotions for the Canada women’s soccer team would be a gross understatement. After being docked six points for the drone incident, this team was as good as dead and buried. Whatever happens off the field will happen. The team cannot control that. But after being given up for dead, this team suddenly is in control of its own destiny again.

They needed an improbable win against home team, France, to keep their hopes alive of getting into the medal round. France scored the first school and seemed to have all the momentum at half time. But, Canada tied the game up early in the second half on a goal that knocked the French goalie out of the game. This resulted in a long pause in the game. There was another long pause after the French captain got injured. So once 90 minutes had been played, there was still 13 minutes of injury time to play. Canada scored the go ahead goal at the 12th minute with Vanessa Gilles getting the goal. Living rooms and bars across the nation erupted when Canada scored. Canada loves underdogs and ironically, our women’s soccer team despite the championship pedigree was a major underdog on Sunday. The roller coaster did not end even after the go ahead goal was scored. For some unknown reason, the referee did not blow her end of game whistle for another 3 1/2 minutes after the 13 minute injury time mark. Finally, though the whistle was blown, and Canada lives on to play Columbia on Wednesday. If they win, they go to the medal round (quarter finals actually but one step away)

The women deserve full credit for the victory. Hoping the story continues after Wednesday.
