Saving Face?

The Liberals, with the support of the NDP, passed the two month GST tax holiday, yesterday. this holiday on a number of items, including children’s clothes, diapers and champagne, will take affect on December 14. This was not supported by the Bloc or by the conservatives.

The Liberals other holiday gift, that being the $250 rebate, for everyone working in 2023 and making $150,000 a year, will not get passed. The Bloc will not support it because it does not include seniors and the NDP will not support it because it doesn’t include students and people on disability supports, as well as, seniors. inclusion of all these groups would have dramatically increased the $4.6 billion cost in shelling out this money.

The Liberals realized that their initial proposal of just including those who work in 2023 and making under $150,000 floated like a leaded balloon. So they are most likely thankful for the NDP and the Bloc not supporting the measure. The Conservatives also did not support the measure because they were just being their obstinate selves.

Of course, this is all political theatre in advance of the upcoming 2025 election. By the time the election does happen this will probably be long forgotten, and other issues will be at play.

That is all I got for today today.
