Donald Trump, even after Justin Trudeau’s visit to Mar-a-Lago, is still threatening to levy a 25% tariff on all goods coming in from Canada. Prime Minister Trudeau, along with the premieres from the provinces and the territories are working on a plan to strike back, should Trump go ahead with the tariff.
Doug Ford jumped the gun a couple days ago by stating that his province, Ontario would cut off energy exports to bordering states such as Michigan and New York. The federal government yesterday announced that they’re considering a 25% export tax on high demand products such as petroleum, uranium, and potash. This announcement has caused visible cracks in the team Canada approach.
Danielle Smith, premier of Alberta, a high petroleum exporter, put it this way,
“I will tell you what will happen if they do that: They will have a national-unity crisis at the same time as they have a crisis with our biggest relationship with the Americans.”
Scott Moe, premier of neighbouring province, Saskatchewan, an exporter of all the products identified above, commented that,
“If they are under consideration, that would be a complete betrayal by the Trudeau government of the team approach they have been advocating and a complete betrayal of Canadians.”
So cracks are showing already in the team Canada approach. Smith and Moe have valid concerns. it will be up to Trudeau to address those concerns, one way or another, or else the team Canada approach will be a failure. All I got for today.
