Canada‘s response, to the Trump tariffs, will be a 25% tariff on $30 billion dollars worth of US imports effective this Tuesday, and an additional $125 billion worth of US imports 21 days later. The additional 21 days is to allow Canadian companies to adjust their supply chains.

Prime Minister Trudeau after meeting with the premiers yesterday gave the following message to Americans.

“This is a choice that will harm Canadians, but beyond that, it will have real consequences for you, the American people. Tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American auto assembly plants and other manufacturing plants. They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery stores and gas at the pump.”

Canada will not be pussyfooting around. There’s nothing scarier than an angry beaver.

Many Americans are questioning Trump’s tariffs. The Wall Street Journal is calling Trump’s tariffs the dumbest trade war ever. A former Bush trade official, put it this way.

“To impose tariffs as high as 25% on our closest trading partners risks decimating the North American economic powerhouse—which the US relies on. Why would you want to burn your own house down?”

Why indeed? One could hope that cooler heads will prevail. But that is assuming that all the actors in this play are adults. Donald Trump right now is like a kid playing with matches. Everybody is going to lose this game. Donald Trump has been at the helm of the two biggest North American disasters in the 21st-century. The first disaster was Covid. This will be the second disaster.
