Reports are out, that Mark Carney will go to the Governor-General, on Sunday, for the purpose of calling the federal election rumoured to be set for April 28.
Canada has undergone a tumultuous past few months. Just two months ago, the Liberals were languishing in the pools, and the conservatives were set to establish a majority government. Then, Justin Trudeau, resigned, and Donald Trump became president of the United States and everything went topsy-turvy. As of now, just two months later, the liberal was our favour to win the next election with a possibility of getting a majority government. An election swing, such as this, has never happened in Canadian history.
Nothing has settled yet. The liberals are on a momentum rush, to be sure. But the pendulum could switch the other way, just as easily. Mark Carney has never been on an election campaign, while Poilievre and Singh have been. Carney has a vulnerability with his command of the French language. This could cost him dearly in the French debate that will most certainly be held. Carney, given his parties in increasing lead, will be targeted from all directions. Will he be able to handle this in both the French and English debate?
The election, aside, Canada is facing challenges that will have to be addressed during this election campaign period. Trump will be implementing more tariffs on April 2. Canada this week implemented 100% tariffs on electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on steel coming in from China. China has retaliated with tariffs including 100% tariff on canola. China along with the US are the top two countries that Canada exports canola to. This will have a devastating effect on Canada’s canola farmers. This is just one area that needs to be addressed in the next 38 or so days. But with everyone campaigning…?
As that saying goes, if you think the last couple of months were wild, just hold my beer.
That’s all I have for today.
