There is a saying that goes ‘the squeaky wheel gets the grease’. Danielle Smith has been making a lot of noise lately trying to get the attention of Mark Carney and Canada. She is saying that she wants Alberta to be a sovereign province within Canada, something similar to Quebec. She is making the demands of Canada. She warns that if these demands are not met, it will put Canada into a crisis. She brings up the looming spectre of separation.
Smith claims she does not want separation. Yet she’s pushing for a law that would reduce the number of signatures required, for a referendum, from 20% to 10%. This proposed law would also extend the signature period from 90 days to 120 days. Given Alberta’s last provincial election this would mean 175,000 signatures.
An Alberta separation group, known as the Alberta prosperity project (APP), is claiming that they could easily come up with 200,000 signatures already, if they were to go on a signature campaign.
According to an Angus Reid poll, released last week, 36% of Albertans would definitely vote for or are leaning towards voting for separation. Mark Carney has dealt with separation issues before. He was governor of the Bank of England, when the UK chose to leave the EU.
Another player in this is Pierre Poilievre. He will soon be running for by election, in a conservative safe seat, in Alberta. This is the last thing he wants. To be the opposition leader in a province voting to separate. Does he push for a united Canada, which would guarantee lost Alberta conservative votes in the next federal election, if Alberta does not separate. Or does he stay quiet and look like a wimp in doing so?
Fun times in Alberta.
That is all I have for today.
