The liberals, with support from the conservatives, thank you Andrew Scheer, pushed through Bill C-5. With this bill, the government will have the ability to fast track projects that are considered to be of national interest.
This bill is a direct response to Donald Trump‘s tariff threats and implementation of those threats. As per Mark Carney,
“This is what makes us different from the United States, this is what makes us more independent from the United States, this is what’s going to move us forward.”
The bill was introduced on June 6, and passed last night June 20. Mark Carney responded to the criticism of how speedy the bill was passed, as follows,
“And if you don’t think we’re in a crisis, go to Sault Ste. Marie, go to Hamilton, go to Windsor.”
Both the Soo and Hamilton are being hit by Trump‘s steel tariffs, while Windsor is being hit by the auto tariffs.
Even though this bill was passed in record time, this is just the easy part. There have been concerns, raised already, by an environmental groups and by first nations. Also, there are disagreements as to how projects, if and when approved, will get done. For example, Danielle Smith, and Alberta, are demanding that one of the projects be the establishment of a pipeline through BC so that Alberta can export its oil to Asian countries. Meanwhile, BC premier, David Eby, is not sold on the idea. Furthermore, no projects, as of yet, have been identified. This is going to be a painful process, no matter what. But it is a start.
That is all I have for today.
