There are now over 100 fatalities in the central Texas flood. This number will go up as there is still a number of people unaccounted for. Given that it is five days into this, it is highly unlikely that any of those unaccounted for will be found alive.
As more information comes out, fingers are starting to be pointed. It appears that local politicians will be shouldering some of the blame, given that opportunities were there for emergency alert system systems to be updated, and these opportunities were passed upon. This is especially of concern, given that the vicinity of Kerr County is a known high flood risk area.
This was supposedly a one and 100 year event. However, these 100 year events appear to be occurring annually. So climate change can be blamed. However, Republicans do not believe in climate change, although some, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, believe in weather manipulation.
On a national level, Democrats are calling for investigations and are blaming the DOGE cuts to the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA) and the national weather service (NWS).
Republicans are crying foul, over this, calling this blame game tactic, despicable. This is kind of like the pot calling the kettle, black, given that Trump blamed the fires last year in Los Angeles on Biden and the Democrats and he blamed the air disaster in Washington early this year on Biden.
Trump is trying to distance himself from this natural disaster. We all remember Katrina and how the response to the hurricane tarnished Bush’ legacy. We all remember. ‘ you’re doing a great job Brownie’.
Let’s hope that something meaningful comes out of all this, not only for the residents of Kerrville, but for all others who might be in similar environments. Given the current political environment, though, I’m not hopeful.
That is all I have for today.
