Shutdown Surrender

Until last night, the Democrats had a lot of momentum going their way. They had big wins in the elections last Tuesday. Trump‘s popularity rating was sinking. Air traffic was going to be a mess this week. There was a big uproar about SNAP funding. Stories about healthcare consumers about to suffer from exploding costs due to the end of Obama care subsidies, were coming out. To top it off Trump was the one being blamed for the shut down. The Democrats had it all going their way.

So what did the Democrats do last night in the Senate? They compromised with Republicans on a deal that would end the shut down. With regard to the subsidies all they got is an agreement to have a vote on it in December. It is guaranteed that the vote will end up with the Obama care subsidies being ended.

Today there is major disillusionment within democrat ranks

Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted,

“I will not support a deal that does nothing to make health care more affordable. We are in a health care emergency. … A vote for this bill is a mistake.”

Senator Bernie Sanders chirped in,

“My own thought is that it would be a horrific mistake to cave in to Trump right now.”

And Senator Gallego from Arizona put it this way,

At a time when prices are already too high, Americans are shopping for health insurance and experiencing such sticker shock that they are being forced to sign up for a crappy, overpriced plan or not signing up for insurance at all.”

In all honesty, it’s hard to understand what those Democrat senators who compromised were thinking. This could give the Republican house a repeat victory in the 2026 midterms which means an additional two years of an unfettered Trump.

That’s all I have for today.
