Pierre Poilievre, received a very unpleasant Christmas surprise, yesterday. Michael Ma, representing the riding of Markham-Unionville, left the Conservative caucus and crossed the floor to the Liberals. The Liberals are now one short of a majority. This is one night after Ma had a group picture of him and his wife taken with Pierre at the Conservative caucus Christmas party.
Ma, gave his reason for crossing the floor, as follows
“I have concluded that Prime Minister Mark Carney is offering the steady, practical approach we need to deliver on the priorities I hear every day while door knocking in Markham–Unionville. That includes making life more affordable, growing a strong Canadian economy, strengthening community safety, and creating real opportunities for young people and families who are working hard to build their Canadian dream.”
To say that this is a blow to Pierre, is a severe understatement. In the last few months, two former conservatives have come crossed the floor and one conservative has announced that he will resign his seat next spring.
It could be said that Pierre needs to take a look in the mirror and see what he needs to do to change his party’s fortunes. The thing is he already said he would do that after the April election loss. He has not changed at all. His popularity rating is at an all-time low. He still has major support from his own party, but, after yesterday, that will likely dip.
Pierre will undergo a leadership review, in January. We are at a stage that he might not get a decent enough support level to remain as leader. Would he stay on, as leader, if his level of support is under 60% yet over 50%? With his ego, he just might, which the Liberals would dearly hope for.
There are rumblings that more Conservatives might cross the floor before Parliament resumes in late January. But Mark Carney and the Liberals best not count their hatches before they chicken just yet. There are also rumblings of a number of Trudeau era Liberals, that are unhappy with the way Mark Carney is shifting the party to the right. This might result in the NDP getting a few pleasant crossover surprises.
That is all I have for today.
