Sleepwalking Or Strategic

The US seized an oil, tanker, off the coast of Venezuela, yesterday. Donald Trump, in his usual eloquent style, described the boarding of the vessel as follows.

“large tanker, very large, largest one ever seized, actually.”

As of yet, not much as known, about the boarding, as to the why. One Democrat senator is concerned that Trump could be sleepwalking in the US into a war with Venezuela.

There’s no doubt that Trump wants Venezuelan oil. That is very similar to what George Bush and Dick Cheney wanted back in 2003, with Iraqi oil. That did not turn out too well for them.

Back in 1991, George Bush Senior, attacked Iraq, after Iraq invaded Kuwait. But he pulled out after the mission was accomplished. I thought this would give him an election victory in 1992. Instead, it was the economy, stupid, and he lost to Bill Clinton.

George Bush, the son, invaded Iraq in 2003, with the intent of creating regime change. It resulted in a terrible loss of US treasury, US military lives, and Iraqi civilian lives.

Donald Trump could be looking at the same thing, now, that being regime change. There are potential major consequences. Venezuela, could end up like Iraq, with years of bloodshed and turmoil.

But there is another side to this coin. The winner of this year’s Nobel peace prize, is Maria Carina Machado. She happens to be the opposition leader, in Venezuela. Until a couple days ago, she had been in hiding in Venezuela for the last 11 months.

With US help, she escape the country and is now in Norway. She arrived a day too late to collect her Nobel peace prize. Instead, it was her daughter who collected the peace prize.

Venezuela is currently under the dictator, Maduro. Since he has come to power, Venezuela has suffered a severe economic downturn, resulting in massive poverty and hundreds of thousands in the country. Ms. Machado indicates that if she had been found by Maduro, she would’ve been prevented from leaving Venezuela and most likely would’ve been imprisoned.

This is what she said about receiving the peace prize.

“what we Venezuelans can offer the world is the lesson forged through this long and difficult journey: that to have democracy, we must be willing to fight for freedom.”

Nobody, absolutely nobody, including Trump, knows how this will end. Trump is probably motivated, to a degree, by the fact that his ratings are slipping and he might very well lose the house in 2026. He is hoping that this might give him a political victory. George Bush Senior thought the same thing back in 1991 and it did not work out for him.

It also has just been announced, that Vladimir Putin, has called Maduro, offering support. If it was anyone else, but Trump, I would be kind of assured that at least there’s an adult in the room. I do not have that assurance with Trump. All we can do is wait and see.

That’s all I have for today.
