Just in case you have not noticed there’s this thing going on called the FIFA World Cup. Three countries are hosting it, Mexico, USA and Canada. Being a host country, Canada automatically qualified for the round of 48.
Canada has been in three World Cup. Back in 1986 in Mexico, where they did not score a goal in any of their three matches. In 2022, in Qatar, they actually managed to score a goal. It was our first goal in a World Cup game.
This year in our first game against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada got their first point ever with a one to one draw. Yesterday in front of 50,000+ fans, including Mark Carney, Canada beat Qatar six nil. For their first ever win in a World Cup game. If they draw or win against Switzerland next Wednesday, it’ll be the first time ever they’ve gone into the second round of World Cup play. Actually, even with a loss, Canada should get into the second round given goal margin differentials.
In all honesty, Canada should’ve won the first game because they outplayed their opposition. They dominated Qatar yesterday and now they’re on to Switzerland. Their coach compared this win to Mike Weir winning the Masters in 2003 and Sydney Crosby scoring the golden goal to win the 2010 Olympics, which also happened in Vancouver.
So enjoy the ride Canada, and we await next Wednesday for the next match.
That’s what I have for today.
