This is Graham Platner. Up until last night, he was the democrat candidate for Senator in Maine. He dropped out of the race last night, following accusations by women of sexual misconduct, including one woman who said he raped her while intoxicated. He did not go quietly.

“It’s not the false allegations though that have brought us to where we are. It’s the fact that they are being used by the political establishment to put structural pressure on us. We live in a political system that is not built for normal people. It is a system built structurally to make sure that movements like ours cannot flourish.”

Platner has been a controversial candidate from the start of his campaign to represent the Democrats. This includes a tattoo, which supposedly has Nazi overtones. The Democrats desperately want a candidate from Maine to win in November given that they think they have a good chance to defeat the incumbent, republican, Susan Collins.

The Democrats are facing the same hard left wave of candidates that the Republicans faced in 2010 with the hard right tea party candidates. Establishment Democrats are facing and have faced, tough primary fights from candidates further to the left. What this will mean is an even further divided Congress with little chance of any compromise at all.

Platner dropping out due to women making allegations is kind of ironic. I have been told that these women making the accusations have sounded credible. As such, Platner had to drop out. The irony is that Karen McDougal, the longtime mistress of Donald Trump, and Stormy Daniels also sounded credible. Yet, Donald Trump is still president. Meanwhile, Christine Blasey Ford also sounded credible, yet Brett Cavanagh is a Supreme Court judge.
