When Trump was President, NATO was one of his favourite targets. He would go out of his way to denigrate and diminish the role of NATO. NATO has been a thorn to Trump’s friend, Putin, and there were legitimate concerns that if Trump did win the 2024 election that he would withdraw the US from NATO.
A couple of days, Congress passed an $886 billion defense spending bill. It was a bipartisan vote of 310-118. Both Republicans and Democrats supported the Bill. One small portion of the Bill involved NATO.
The Bill days that no president shall denounce, suspend, terminate or withdraw from NATO without an act of Congress and two-third majority of Senate. Furthermore, president must give 180 notice of intent to withdraw from NATO.
A number of Republicans allowed this section to be included in the Bill. While they might not say it out loud they are aware that restraints have to be put on Trump if, God help us, he ever becomes president again. Enjoy your Friday.
