The great debate debacle continues for Donald Trump. The argument continues as to whether microphones should be left on for both candidates throughout the debate. This is within the backdrop of the Harris momentum and trump’s need to be the centre of attention at all times.
Trump at one time, was a strong proponent of the microphones being open at all times. Back in 2016, it worked for him against Hillary. He kept interrupting her throughout the debates and threw her off her game. Back in 2016, the race was between two unpopular candidates. So Trump got away with it.
In 2020, it did not work so well for Trump. the most memorable line of the 2020 debates was Joe Biden, after one of Trump’s interrupt, saying ‘ will you shut up, man?’. The race in 2020 was between two candidates who voters at most felt. ‘bleh’.
Now this race is between an unpopular candidate, that being Trump, and a candidate with relatively high favourability ratings. Harris wants the microphones open. with her style, she is sure to get Trump’s goat and have a look very unpresidential. Trump if he did what he did in 2016 and 2020 would be doing this against a woman of mixed racial descent. He would come across as a bully. Harris also would have her now familiar ‘I am speaking’ come back ready and waiting to be used.
Harris is already teasing Trump about his hesitation to enter the debate. The Harris team released a video of Trump talking on Fox with the sound of a chicken in the background. This is something new for Trump. A candidate willing to get in the mud with him.
Harris is calling the shots. I still think the Trump accept being in the debate with the microphones open at all times. It will not turn out good for him.
