Half Time Show

I,like many millions, watched the Super Bowl on Sunday. When the halftime show came, I like many of my generation tuned it out. I simply am not into rap music. And, instead of watching the show, I was on my phone texting. Basically I panned the show and many others of my generation did the same.

The next day, texting with my daughter, she asked me what I thought of the show, and I told her and she proceeded to give me a tongue lashing. She said it was one of the most historic shows ever.

She gave me some links describing the halftime show, and I did some review myself afterwards. I have to concur with her that it was a historic halftime show, especially given the presence of Donald Trump at the game.

The show started with Samuel L Jackson coming on as a black Uncle Sam but in reality representing Uncle Tom. At one point, in the show, Jackson reprimands Kendrick Lamar by saying that the show is.

“too loud, too reckless, too ghetto,”

Stereotypes. At one point in the show,

Lamar sings out,

“The revolution is about to be televised; You picked the right time but the wrong guy.”

Many say, that was a direct reference to Donald Trump, who, as mentioned, was at the game.

Then, there was the background for the performance. It was set to appear like a prison yard with all Black dancers performing. It was a message highlighting the high incarceration rates of Blacks in America and the disparities in the justice system along the lines of race.

At one point in the show, the dancers, all dressed in red, white and blue, symbolizing the American flag, bent forward and lifted their backs to the air. This was seen as a symbol of Black Americans under slavery. Profits gained on the backs of Blacks.

In the performance, Lamar is seen walking in the middle as the dancers separate, a message of the cultural divide in the country.

I explained to my daughter that for us order folks, the halftime show, along with the message attached, might’ve been more effective if someone like Bruce Springsteen had the lead on the halftime show. A black version of Springsteen. She responded that there is no black version of Springsteen. Point taken.

With Trump attacking free speech, this protest, to such a massive audience, might not occur again under the Trump regime. A frightening thought.

All I have for today.

One response to “Half Time Show”

  1. Fran and I thought the same way, if that was the message, great, someone has to explain it to us younger people
