My chirp, yesterday, centred around Justin Trudeau, telling business and labour leaders last Friday that Trump was serious about annexing Canada. Yesterday, thought for a whole pre-Super Bowl audience, on Fox entertainment, Trump confirmed this.
When asked if he was serious about annexing Canada,
“Yeah it is a real thing”
“I think Canada would be much better off being the 51st state because we lose $200 billion a year with Canada. And I’m not going to let that happen. Why are we paying $200 billion a year, essentially a subsidy to Canada?”
first of all, no one knows where he gets his $200 billion figure from. In 2023 there was a trade deficit of $73 billion. That is, Canada exported to the states $73 billion worth of good more than it imported from the states. Most of that, though, is the oil and gas that the US imported from Canada.
On his flight home from the Super Bowl, Trump announced that he would be imposing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, including imports from Canada, a major exporter of the goods to the United States. He plans to sign an executive order reflecting his statement, later today.
As mentioned, in an earlier chirp, Trump is like a little kid playing with matches. Sooner, rather than later, he is going to set fire, and it is going to go, boom, right in his face. This will of course, have a serious effect on the Canadian economy, but it will also have a major effect on US manufacturers that rely on Canadian imports of aluminum and steel. Somewhere in Kentucky, in a couple weeks, two good ole boys are gonna be wondering why the price of beer went up. Well because of aluminum cans.
Trump may very well impose the 25% tariffs that threatened on February 1 on March 1. There is a story circulating that the automobile industry in both Canada and the US were hours away of shutting down completely if Trump had imposed the tariffs on February 1.
Trump is set to open a Pandora’s box of hurt, both outside and inside his country. He is starting to seriously piss off, us Canadians. This is far from over.
All I got for today.
