The Catch

Yesterday’s chirp was about Ukrainian leader, Zelensky, coming to Washington to sign and agreement with Trump, where Ukraine would share its rare earth minerals in exchange for reconstruction of Ukraine and security of the nation. More details are coming out and it is not as great a deal as it seemed at first blush.

First of all, Ukrainians are not happy with the fact that the US will have access to $500 billion worth of Ukrainian rare earth minerals. Second of all the security arrangement is not as it first seemed.

The draft text of the agreement indicates that the US is not making any firm commitments on security.

“supports Ukraine’s efforts to obtain security guarantees needed to establish lasting peace.”

Zelensky himself has conceded that the agreement does not have,

“concrete steps on security guarantees”

Donald Trump has been host to a number of European leaders in the past few weeks. French leader, Macron, visited the White House, in the last few days, and, now,British Prime Minister, Starmer, will be paying a visit. This is what Trump said about Ukraine security situation.

“I’m not going to make security guarantees beyond very much. We’re going to have Europe do that … Europe is their next-door neighbor.”

Starmer, in response, stated that US security guarantees is a must for a viable peace.

“I’m absolutely convinced that we need a lasting peace, not a ceasefire, and for that to happen we need security guarantees.”

this confusing mess is pure Trump. With whatever hold that Putin has on him, I can’t see much in the way of Trump giving any security guarantees to Ukraine.

That’s all I have for today.
