Trump’s Gift

A little over two months ago, Canada’s liberal party was pretty much left for dead. Pierre Poilievre was licking his chops. Looking forward to a majority government for his conservative party. He was identifying himself with US president elect Donald Trump. He was using many of the same phrases, as Trump, such as the phrase common sense solutions. He was also pushing the phrase. Canada is broken.

Even after Justin Trudeau announced that he was resigning, the liberals were still trailing the conservatives by over 20% in the polls.

Then Donald Trump became president. And he began his path of destruction in the US. Initiating a slew of executive orders by bypassing Congress in doing so. Trump also began his insane tariff war with Canada and the world.

Trump’s insanity has created a patriotic fervour, in Canada, unlike any I’ve seen since maybe back to the 1972 Canada-Russia Summit series, in hockey. This created a momentum for the liberal party that only increased, with the selection of Mark.Carney, as the next liberal leader, and as such the next Prime Minister of Canada.

This has left Pierre Poilievre and his conservative party flailing, trying to regain the momentum. The momentum that the liberals are riding on is such that both the latest Nanos poll and Léger poll are showing the liberals and conservatives virtually tied. Even if the conservative win, now, Poilievre’s dreams of a majority government have been dashed. However, the way the momentum is going, the liberals could very well for the next government. They would have Donald Trump to thank for that.

That’s all I have for today.
