Most red blooded Canadians wanted Mark Carney to go after Donald Trump yesterday. In that sense, he disappointed us. But his strategy was a lot more effective than what we wanted.

Mark Carney said very little in the near 40 minute photo op. But he got his message across in two short statements, while Trump rambled on and on

Trump again pressed on the issue of Canada being a 51st state. Carney came back with the fact that he has talked to the owners of Canada (loved that) and the owners told him that Canada will never ever ever be a 51st state. While Trump kept on rambling about this, Carney kept mouthing never. That was beautiful.

The second time that Mark Carney had a chance to talk, he fact checked Trump. Trump was saying that US has very little trade with Canada. Mark Carney came back with the fact that Canada is America’s biggest trading partner. Boom!

What went on behind closed doors has not come out yet. But it was probably not that friendly. Mark Carney in his press conference afterwards did not give any details. But he was unruffled, and his sense of humour came through. When asked about what he thought when Trump made certain statements, Carney said it’s a good thing you can’t read my mind. When a national post reporter asked if Carney asked Trump to stop talking about the 51st state. Carney said yes. When the reporter asked well, what did you say? Carney came back with what you just said.

We wanted blood, yesterday. Mark Carney instead played it cool and diplomatically and he got his shots in anyway.
