China is hosting a two day Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit this week. It is a definite show of force, intent to display to the west, that China is a world leader in international affairs and has a number of allies behind it
The usual suspects will be there, including Putin of Russia and Kim Jong-Il of North Korea. One surprising attendee is Modi from India. This is the same India that Trump levied huge tariffs against, earlier last week, for purchasing oil from Russia. Strangely though Trump did not issue such tariffs on Russia
India has the fourth largest economy in the world. India and China have been bitter enemies for a long time. There have been a number of border disputes between the two countries. Yet, here we are, China and India are getting together. China, given it its own tariffs levied on them by Trump are actively seeking trading partners to diminish the blow. Don’t be surprised of Canada increases trade with China. Don’t be surprised if Canada reduces its tariffs on electric vehicles from China in return for China reducing tariffs on canola sold by Canada.
Part of Trump’s , reasoning for these tariffs is that he wants to increase manufacturing in the US. The only problem withTrump’s continuing isolation approach is that he will start losing markets as other countries find other trading partners. The sad part is these effects will likely not strike home until Trump is long gone. It will be the next president who pays for Trump’s folly.
Is all I have for today.
